Naval Infantry was unofficially created in 1668 on a navy ship called "Orel"(Eagle). The naval infantry proved very successful and Peter I (The Great) ordered the official creation of Naval Infantry in November of 1705.
Currently the Naval Infantry patrols and protects the Russian sea and ocean borders. The purpose of the Naval Infantry is to secure important objects along the coast before the main forces arrive.
